Everything you need to know before starting an interior fitout
Frequently asked questionsWoodland Fitouts

What is an interior fitout?
Interior fitout is the name given to the building of an interior space, including retail stores, medical facilities, health clinics, cafes, restaurants, offices and commercial spaces. If you are opening a new store, office or hospitality venue, it is likely that you will need an interior fitout to customise the space for your business.
How much does a fitout cost?
The cost of a fitout for an office, shop, health clinic, cafe or restaurant will be dependent on a variety of factors including the size of floorplan, the existing layout, the joinery you require, and the level of detail you want to include. Woodland Fitouts can guide you on budget based on thousands of previous projects so you know from the beginning how much you need to make your dream space a reality.
The most helpful way to stick to your fitout budget is to work with a trusted interior designer who will design your space to meet your budget. There’s no use having a design that will realistically cost double your budget. What sets Woodland Fitouts apart from many others is our close relationships with many of the best design studios. We partner with the designers from the very beginning to ensure the design and fitout of your space is within your budget.
The collaboration between our designers and Project Managers ensure everyone is on the same page in regards to your budget, timeline, and project needs – with everyone working together to bring your vision to life.
What is included in a fitout?
You can choose to purchase your own equipment, for example, beauty beds, cooking appliances or trade-specific equipment. Or, you can ask for everything (and the kitchen sink) to be included. Generally, a fitout will at least include the flooring, walls, fixtures and fittings. Having the fitout company take care of everything, including all trades, gives you the time to focus on your business.
How long does an interior fitout take from start to finish?
The timeline for a fitout project will be determined by the size of the project. For a basic fitout, we suggest allowing 12-14 weeks for design, through to manufacturing, and installation. One of the benefits of having a fitout company with its own joinery factory is the fast turn-around with bespoke joinery, meaning you get quality products that are designed and built just for your business without needing to wait on overseas deliveries and delays.
How do I find a reputable shopfitter or interior fitout company?
The best interior fitout companies will often have repeat clients over many years. There is a reason companies keep going back to the best shopfitters in the industry. Woodland Fitouts is proud to have been working with many of our clients for many decades, including Michael Hill, Supercheap Auto, BCF, Bank of Queensland (BOQ) and many smaller businesses.

How to choose the right interior designer?
Interior designers do more than just choose the right colours and furniture. Our expert team will help you create the space of your dreams, ensuring you maximise the space you have and create your desired feel for your customers and clients.
Choosing a designer who works closely with a fitout company will save you time and money. The designer will know your budget and how much it realistically costs to build that space. If you can choose a designer who already works with the fitout company’s project manager, you are already closer to achieving your dream on time and on budget. There is nothing worse than being disappointed when your dream design actually costs double the budget you have – meaning you have to find more money or compromise on what to include. A designer-fitout partnership is your key to a disappointment-free experience.
What to consider when opening an office, retail store, cafe or restaurant?
Opening any commercial space (office, retail, cafe, or restaurant) requires careful planning. Once you have found a tenancy – you will need interior design and fitout to make best use of the space, and to make it your own. Contact a local interior fitout company so they can help you with timelines, budgets, and design. You can start working on a mood board or concepts that will help the interior designer know the desired look and feel.
How do I know what licences and permits are needed to open a business?
There could be any number of licences and permits needed for your business, including council and shopping centre requirements.
Woodland Fitouts’ projects team will take care of all permits needed relating to the construction, meaning you can focus on the exciting step of opening your new business.
Will I need a project manager to open a new store or restaurant?
You could project manage the fitout yourself, but you will save yourself a lot of time and money by engaging an expert to take care of this. You will have so many other things to worry about when opening your business, that coordinating trades and delivery of materials is one stress we can take off your plate.
How do I find the best shopfitting or fitout company for my business?
Have a look at the fitout company’s past projects. Do they have a similar look and feel to what you want for your business? If you like the look of their work, contact the fitout company to discuss your project.
The fitout company will become an extension of your business during this phase (and even into the future), so choosing the right one will be crucial. Fitout companies with their own joinery manufacturing will ensure quality unlike any other. You don’t want cheap overseas joinery that won’t last.
You can also search for companies through the Interior Fitout Association member directory.
